Once in a Blue Moon...

If you are heading out to a SANParks destination on the last weekend of this month, be sure to take advantage of the clean night air and enjoy the Blue Moon on Saturday 30 June.

A 'Blue Moon' happens, well, only once in a Blue Moon. It's not a very rare occurence, and is simply when there is a second full moon in one month.

For your information, here's some info on the Moon Phases and visibility of planets during July

Moon Phases in July

7 July – Last Quarter

14 July – New Moon

22 July – First Quarter

30 July – Full Moon

Planets in the Evenings

Saturn is visible in the first week of July, but only for about an hour after sunset. Jupiter can be seen all evening. Venus still shines very brightly in the evening twilight until mid-July.

SANParks offers an astronomy activity at Olifants Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park. The newly proclaimed Mokala National Park will also offer star gazing activities.

For more information about viewing activities visit www.astronomyafrica.com or call +27 (0)82 901 3796, or email eckhart@ecosat.co.ca
